After their stirring show in Russia, JaME caught up with
Gunji and
ADAPTER。. Despite the tiredness caused by the tight tour schedule, they answered our questions about their music, coupling tour, anime and more.
Hello, guys! The very first question is of course about the show: how was it?
ADAPTER。: I liked it very much!
Gunji: It’s my third time playing in Moscow. I love everything.
And how was your tour so far?
ADAPTER。: The schedule is really tight but we are happy we can meet the overseas audience.
Gunji: Since it’s our first coupling tour with
ADAPTER。, we want everyone to like our shows. That’s why we are playing our hearts out at every concert. We'll do our best and make the rest of the tour as good and energetic as its beginning.
In your opinion, what’s the difference between the Japanese and overseas audience?
ADAPTER。: I don’t think there’s a big difference…. What’s more important is that people look really happy.
Gunji: European fans are really hot and absolutely crazy! Every show is a blast, and this is pleasing for us. I love playing in Europe.
ADAPTER。: When you greet the Japanese audience you get ‘konnichiwa’ in response – it’s nice, of course. But when you hear the same ‘konnichiwa’ overseas, it’s a hundred times more awesome.
ADAPTER。, how would you describe your music?
ADAPTER。: I prefer club music. I try to combine it with the visual kei melodiousness.
Speaking of visual kei, an artist who works in this genre cannot underestimate the importance of the visual aspect, and one of the easiest ways of conveying it is through music videos. ADAPTER。 has several PVs, while Gunji still doesn’t….
Gunji: But you still can watch
the fool videos! Honestly speaking, I’m going to shoot a music video soon.

Gunji: Yes, I’d like to shoot a music video of
Joker. However, I believe videos to be only a part of an artist’s activities, which is made up of song-writing process, lives, visuals…. All these things influence people’s perception of the artist. So every aspect is important.
ADAPTER。, please tell us what’s most significant in a music video? An image? A storyline?
ADAPTER。: I think a process of shooting a music video is an artist’s attempt to embody his thoughts and ideas in some form that is clear for people. Personally I’m trying to put the ‘core of Japan’ into my every video. Thus, I help people to feel the true Japan.
One of the most popular ADAPTER。 songs is undoubtedly Adeosu.
Can you tell us about it?
ADAPTER。: The title of the song is the Spanish word for goodbye, but there’s also another meaning: a Japanese one. “Ade” is something close in meaning to “
wabi-sabi”, and “osu” means “male.” Thus, “adeosu” is a man with a traditional Japanese worldview. An unintentional pun.

was featured in the soundtrack of anime "Brave 10". Have you watched it?
ADAPTER。: Yes, and I liked it a lot.
Was this song written specifically for this anime?
ADAPTER。: Yeah. I read the manga and found it interesting. When I was offered to compose an ending for its anime adaptation, I grasped that offer immediately.
Gunji, do you like anime? Maybe you, too, want to compose a theme for an anime series?
Gunji: One of my favorite anime is “Hunter×Hunter.” By the way, I don’t like “One Piece.” It’s too popular! I’m also into a new anime series, titled “Assassination Classroom.” I guess these two are my favorite anime. I wish I could make a song for them!
Can you describe each other?
ADAPTER。: (in English)
Gunji is a crazy boy! (Casts his eyes down)
ADAPTER。 is very shy. He is cool, and I am modest.
Gunji: I’m a long-term fan of
Fukusuke-san, ever since he played guitar in
metronome. I saw him at lives and always respected him. Then I finally got a chance to be introduced to him. He sought an opportunity to play overseas. I contacted my partners: I wanted to support him. As a result we teamed up with him and organized a coupling tour. I could not be happier.
Gunji, not so long ago you were a part of a band. What’s the difference between playing solo and as a part of a band?
Gunji: It’s my first solo tour, and it’s rather tough. I’m nervous and a little bit sad. But….
The audience’s love is all yours!
Gunji: Right! (smiles)
ADAPTER。, what do you think about playing solo?
ADAPTER。: In Japan I’m also a DJ, so standing alone onstage isn’t something new to me. I’m used to it.
Do you plan to perform together in future?
ADAPTER。& Gunji: Definitely! (laugh)
