SCREW - Gather Roses

SCREW has been gaining attention in the visual scene, covering a wide range of styles and sounds in their recent releases. They continue to expand their range with this release, particularly with the title track. However, the most gratifying number on the single is the final song, which brings us back to the dark, metal sound the band is better known for.

Gather Roses is a bit surprising due to its very jazzy feel. SCREW has covered many styles, but this song has a simultaneously old-fashioned and contemporary feel that makes it unexpected. The chorus is fairly unimaginative and feels like a typical visual kei jazz number, but the verses and bridge have some unusual sounds and variations. Yuuto's prominent bass carries the heart of the song throughout, and the song finishes up with a heavy rock feel.

Following is Kareon, a fast paced light rock song notable for its interesting guitar parts; during the bridge we are offered heavy riffs that give the song a metal tint, as well as a playful line that runs all over the scale. Byo's vocal melodies are catchy and inspiring in both the verses and chorus, and it's supported by Jin's driving pace that keeps the energy high.

It seems the band saved the best for last this time. THE BRAINS is exciting right from the beginning with its intro of distorted electronic sounds. When the beat comes in, it's fast and heavy, signaling a darker song. The vocals in the verse are distorted, the guitars of kazuki and Manabu sinister and dark, and while the chorus is lighter and more melodious, we are treated to some yelling and death vocals interspersed at its end, plus screaming during the bridge. Ultimately, the combination of new electronic effects and distortions, aggressive beat and solid melodies make for a winning track and great way to end the album, reassuring fans the band hasn't lost its edge.

Perhaps surprising about this single is that the title track is Gather Roses rather than THE BRAINS, but SCREW seems to be continuing their objective of composing songs with different feels and incorporating various types of music. While this means they won't be accused of doing the same thing over and over, Gather Roses and Kareon are still not strong enough on their own. Without the heavy, more exciting final song, this single would be slightly disappointing. Thankfully, it seems the band does not plan to abandon their aggressive, darker sound any time soon, even while they bring different elements into their repertoire.
