Introducing Starmarie

The three-girl group Starmarie had their first US performance at Anime Expo 2013 in Los Angeles, where JaME found out more about them.


Thank you for taking the time to talk with us! Could you each introduce yourselves?

Nozomi: My name is Nozomi. Please call me Non-chan!!
Shino: My name is Shino. Please call me Shino-hamu!!
Shiori: My name is Shiori. Please call me Shiorin!!

You have an interesting group name. How did you decide on it, and what does it mean?

Starmarie: We just made up several names and chose one.

How did you all meet each other and decide to form a group?

Starmarie: We formed in July of 2008. Shiori was the first member, followed by Non-chan and Shino.

How would you describe your sound, and what would you say makes you stand out as a group?

Nozomi: Starmarie's sound is very unique.
Shino: Our music is always meant to tell a story.
Shiori: It’s almost like our music and live performances are a journey of feelings and we want you to have an experience that’s different from your everyday life, which is why we call ourselves a “fantasy idol unit.”

Could you tell us what some of the lyrics are about? Your releases have very interesting names….

Starmarie: Every song lyric has its own story in it! For example, a guy who had a crush on a woman in a drawing, a restaurant that invites people whose days are numbered, a ghost who works hard to earn his next life, etc. We feature unique songs which idols normally do not sing. We want to fill our fans with fantasy in our own style!

How and when did you decide you wanted to become pop music and fashion idols?

Starmarie: All of us always aspired to be idols/artists!

Who are your inspirations, musically or in general?

Nozomi: I love idol songs! Especially Hello Project!!
Shino: I like K-pop!
Shiori: I like Japanese male singers and rock bands! Especially Mr.Children.

You travelled to the United States for the first time for Anime Expo. Have you been able to see some sights?

Starmarie: We visited Hollywood and Santa Monica Beach for a photo shoot!

We hear you’ve collaborated with a gothic Lolita brand, Opera the Dream House. How did that come about?

Starmarie: The fashion brand was planning to promote their brand in the US, so we collaborated with them for Anime Expo 2013.

Can you tell us a bit about your future plans?

Starmarie: We would like to perform in various countries!!

Where would you like to perform next, if you could perform anywhere in the world?

Nozomi: I want to do a one-man live in Los Angeles!
Shino: I want to perform in South Korea!
Shiori: How about France??

Finally, can you give a message to our readers?

Starmarie: We did our first live in Los Angeles, and it really made us confident with ourselves! We would like to have more shows in United States, and also hope to expand our activities worldwide! In the meantime, we of course will keep doing our best in our home land. We will perform every week, and we really want more people to experience Starmarie’s show! Please support us.
