T.M.Revolution is the solo project of vocalist Takanori Nishikawa. His stage name stands for “Takanori Makes Revolution”, and his charismatic and catchy songs frequently earn him a place among Japan's top-selling artists.
Takanori Nishikawa was born in 1970. In 1990 he became a vocalist in the band Luis~Mary, in which he used the nickname Haine. This group released three singles and then disbanded. In 1995 Nishikawa started his solo project, which in 1996 he named "T.M.Revolution". Takanori was supported by Daisuke Asakura, who later became his producer. Together, Nishikawa and Asakura released the single Black Or White?.
T.M.Revolution’s debut single was released in May 1996 and it reached 28th place in Oricon charts. Soon after he started his first solo tour, T.M.R. LIVE REVOLUTION'96 -monopolize-, and visited three Japanese cities.
In August 1996 he released his first album with the significant title, MAKES REVOLUTION. During the next tour, T.M.R. LIVE REVOLUTION'96 -MAKES REVOLUTION-, he visited eight cities. His next single was the November-released Heart of Sword ~Yoake Mae~, which was used as an ending song in the popular anime "Rurouni Kenshin". This release reached the 16th position on the Oricon charts and increased T.M.R’s popularity.
The year 1997 started with another album release. LEVEL➝3 managed to obtain the 5th position on the Oricon charts. Soon after, three more singles were released: LEVEL 4, HIGH PRESSURE and WHITE BREATH. They were a breakthrough in Takanori’s career. Many copies have been sold and each single topped the charts. Also, T.M.R’s tours became more and more extensive. One tour held in 1997 included 22 dates.
February 1998 brought another album, triple joker, which sold 2.5 million copies. One of the songs was used in a Yamaha commercial. Singles that year were sold in huge amounts, especially HOT LIMIT, which was very profitable and managed to top the Oricon charts. Nishikawa also held a nationwide tour, T.M.R. LIVE REVOLUTION'98 -Joker Type2-, during which he gave 68 performances. The year finished with the release of his tenth single, the Christmas-themed Burnin’Xmas.
The year 1999 started with a big success – Takanori had two consecutive lives at the prestigious Tokyo Dome, where he gathered 100,000 fans in total. Soon after he abandoned his nickname, T.M.Revolution, and started using the end of genesis T.M.R. evolution turbo type D. Under this name he released three singles, Kagerou, Gekkou and Setsugen -winter dust-, and held two tours. Though, in April 2000 he started using “T.M.Revolution" again.
Since the release of the single Out of Orbit ~Triple ZERO~ at the beginning of 2003, Nishikawa has been producing his music on his own, and after the release of the best-of album B★E★S★T, T.M.R. held a tour to promote it. INVOKE, released in October, was used in the anime series "Gundam SEED". Some songs included on the best-of album were also used in this anime.
In August 2003, T.M.Revolution appeared at the US anime convention, OTAKON. The release of his 18th single, Albiero, resulted in a collaboration with Swarovski. Takanori took part in a photo shoot, during which he wore a costume made of those valuable stones. Soon after his next album, SEVENTH HEAVEN, was released, on May Nishikawa performed at Pacific Media Expo - another popular American convention.
Nishikawa’s song was used in the movie "Spider-man 2", and the single ignited was used in "Gundam SEED Destiny". In acknowledgement of Takanori’s contribution to this anime, one of the characters in the series, Heine Westenfluss, was based on him. The character’s appearance resembles the musician’s image from Luis~Mary, and “Westenfluss” translated into Japanese means “Nishikawa”.
In 2005 T.M.Revolution’s eighth album hit the stores and Nishikawa became the vocalist in the newly created band, abingdon boys school. The line up of this band includes keyboardist Toshiyuki Kishi, as well as SUNAO and Hiroshi Shibasaki, who were part of the supportive group that accompanied T.M.Revolution. Up to this day the band released three albums, several singles and took part in many tribute albums and omnibuses. Also they frequently appear in popular festivals like the Inazuma Rock Festival.
The next album, UNDER:COVER, was released in 2006 and contained fifteen songs chosen by fans in a special vote. Soon after another best-of album was released, containing all the singles and music videos released up to the date. In 2006 Nishikawa also celebrated his 36th birthday and 10th anniversary of his career, holding a special performance at Osaka Universal Studios Japan.
In 2007 Nishikawa was busy with abingdon boys school activities due to the release of a new album, so T.M.Revolution released only one live DVD. He came back to his solo project in 2008, upon when he released the single resonance, which was used in the anime series “SOUL EATER”. The musician also took part in the hide memorial summit, the tribute festival to commemorate ten years since the musician passed away. In 2009 T.M.R released a special box set, which contained his first eleven singles, from Dokusai ~monopolize~ to WILD RUSH, and at the end of the year he launched his own indie label, Defrock Records.
2010 was the year of many anime collaborations, as well as Nishikawa’s 15th anniversary. His collaboration with "Gundam SEED" resulted in the album, T.M.R.×GUNDAM SEED SPECIAL PROJECT [X42S-REVOLUTION], which contained all the songs that T.M.R recorded for this series. Also at this time, the single Naked arms / Sword Summit was used in the anime "Sengoku Basara" as well as the game based on this series. What is more, the song Save The One, Save The All was used in the movie “Bleach: Hell Chapter”.
Due to illness Takanori stopped his activates for a while, but soon after he started recording again. In 2011 he released the single FLAGS and the album Cloud Nine, which reached the second position on the Oricon charts and was also released in Europe. His collaboration with "Sengoku BASARA” abounded with several releases. FLAGS was used in the PSP game "Sengoku BASRA Chronicle Heroes", and on November 16, UTAGE, an album containing six tracks from this anime was also released. Autumn brought Takanori a main role in the popular Broadway musical, "ROCK OF AGES", where he sang classic rock hits from the ’80s, including pieces from bands like Bon Jovi, Journey and Europe.
In 2012, after three years of silence, abingdon boys school came back with a new single and T.M.Revolution limited his activities to releasing one DVD and a live-recorded album, T.M.R. LIVE REVOLUTION 11-12 -CLOUD NINE-. For the year 2013, on the other hand, T.M.Revolution announced the release of his second self-cover album, UNDER:COVER 2, which will feature guest artists such as the GazettE, JESSE from RIZE, Tomoyasu Hotei and May J. In August, after ten years, he will also perform during the American convention OTAKON again.
After nearly twenty years, Takanori Nishikawa is still succeeding to surprise his fans with his large myriad of talents. The artist seems unstoppable, and fans can eagerly look forward to what this talented artist will come up with next.
