Kotani Kinya began his musical career in mid-1998 and went through several different support member changes. The following year, Kinya and two of his friends Asakura Daisuke and Kenichi Ito (who are also his producers known by MADS) created a band named Mad Soldiers. The band was given the opportunity to create the music for the upcoming shounen ai anime TV series and OVA called "Gravitation". Mad Soldiers also 'became' the real life version of the band Bad Luck and they, as well as just Kinya himself, released several songs and CDs for the anime. They followed up with several tours throughout the entire year and enjoyed the success and recognition that "Gravitation" helped bring to them.

In the spring of 2000, Kinya released many items in succession and gave five consecutive concerts. The next year, he concentrated more on lives instead of making new music. This gave Kinya the opportunity to get more up close and personal with his fans. He also appeared in a drama entitled Love Story as Nagase Kenji during this time.

Kinya released three DVDs in 2003, and in what was considered to be the high point of his career, decided to take a break after a live in October. Kinya decided to concentrate more on his music yet he still found the time to hold a few intimate lives. However, this was not the only reason for his abrupt hiatus. His label, Antinos Records, was closing its doors and to make matters worse, he no longer had his producers, MADS.

Because of Kinya's lack of activity, his fans were fearing his departure from the music scene. But eventually, he was signed with R and C Ltd. and released a mini album as well as a single. However, despite his return to the scene, many fans were shocked by his new appearance: his sound, as well as his overall look, changed drastically. His trademark peach-colored hair was now dyed black and he dropped the Kotani from his name. Instead of the usually poppy techno the fans had grown to love, the songs were a bit more sophisticated. Although some fans abandoned Kinya after his return, his 'comeback' was successful and he managed to gain a legion of new fans.

In mid-2005, Kinya's song BLAZE was used for the opening for the highly popular CLAMP anime "Tsubasa Chronicle". However, he did not have any releases over the next few years, focusing solely on his live schedule. In January 2008, he re-emerged with a new single, BEST POSITION!!

The past two years have been very busy for Kinya. During his January debut in 2009, he announced he had moved to the record label Quest, and also changed his official name back to Kotani Kinya., adding a period at the end. That year, along with his hefty tour schedule, he released eight singles during the LIVE BOOMER 2009 tour. 2010 was not different, busy with performing live and recording, and saw the release of two albums, Iro and Continuation.

Kinya has already set plans for the upcoming 2011 year, planning to begin the Electrical☆Travel tour in February. With a busy schedule ahead, fans will surely see a lot of Kinya next year!
