In a conversation with MOON Kana, she spoke about herself as well as her new album MOON Dragon
In a closed off room at the Bootleg Theater, JaME was able to have an interview with MOON Kana before her show on April 2nd. She was as cute and fun to talk to as she was on stage. She spoke about herself as well as her new album MOON Dragon.
How has your trip been so far? You have already done an autograph session and made an appearance at Tune in Tokyo, how was this experience?
MOON Kana: It has been great. This was my first autograph signing! Many fans came so I was very happy.
A lot of your concerts are called BUNNY LIVEs. Why do you name your lives this way? What sort of themes do these lives have?
MOON Kana: The BUNNY lives are named after my bunnies. (She holds up a bunny.) They are all handmade, just like my lives. I use these bunnies to connect to my fans.
Please describe your performances on stage for those you have never seen you live. Do you think you're able to express yourself more easily on stage?
MOON Kana: Yes, I think that's true.
You went on a break for a while. Did you keep on writing music?
MOON Kana: I haven’t been active for two years. However, during these two years I was writing and creating my new album, MOON Dragon.
Your new album, MOON Dragon, was recently released. The music seems to be different than previous albums. Were you trying for something different from your previous style?
MOON Kana: I don’t think this album is too different. However, for this album I did use more drum programs. I also put a lot more time into playing guitar for each of the eight songs.
There is a picture of you on your website playing piano. How long have you been playing piano and guitar?
MOON Kana: I have been playing piano since I was six and guitar since I was fifteen.
What other musical instruments are you interested in learning?
MOON Kana: Tambourine!
Dragons seem to be a central theme with this album. What do dragons represent to you?
MOON Kana: Dragon is the name of my cat!
In your free time, what type of music do you listen to? Do you find the music similar to your image or do you think it’d be surprising to other people?
MOON Kana: I listen to all different kinds of music. I listen to jazz, classical, rock and lots of others.
You have toured in many different countries throughout your career, what is your most memorable experience?
MOON Kana: It is not the countries that are memorable. It's all of the fans that are the most memorable.
With a new album just out, you seem to be getting active again. What are you looking forward to the most?
MOON Kana: Definitely the live performances. Lots of them!
Since your first performance outside of Japan, how has the gothic lolita fashion evolved? What would you like to see more of outside of Japan? For example, a certain style or brand?
MOON Kana: It has been four years since I first performed outside of Japan. But gothic Lolita is not my style. I make all of my own clothing. So it’s not really the same. But the gothic Lolita style is cute and I really admire it. But from what I have seen it's evolved so the style is a lot more outrageous and stronger. It used to be really classic and simple prints. But there are also a lot of bolder prints and cuter styles. Which means a lot more cute girls!
How do you think your own style has evolved?
MOON Kana: For my style, it hasn't changed so much. Everything I make is an echo off of each album. So it is not the style that changes so much. Each style is balanced off the music I create.
Please send a message to your fans overseas.
MOON Kana: I am MOON Kana. (In English) My name is MOON Kana. I have just released a new album called MOON Dragon. Please listen to it!
JaME would like to thank MOON Kana, her translator Lisa, as well as Rob Gray for making this interview possible.
