Melodic death metal band RYUJIN started life as the Sapporo-based trio SUICIDE HEAVEN, formed by brothers RYOJI and SHUJI in 2009. The band's name changed to GYZE when the members relocated to Tokyo in 2011. After a frustrating start to life in the capital, their debut album was released in 2013 by Italian label Coroner Records. Initially only available in Europe, it received a belated Japanese release in 2014.
After two albums strongly influenced by European metal, both featuring collaborations with Italian melodeath duo Disarmonia Mundi, they went back to their roots in a big way in 2017. Rebranding themselves as a 'northern nostalgic metal' band, their third album was heavily influenced by the culture of Hokkaido and the island's native Ainu people.
