Originally an acid jazz band, MONDO GROSSO formed in Kyoto in 1991, with Shinichi Osawa as the bandleader and bassist. They made their major label debut in 1993. When MONDO GROSSO broke up in 1996, Osawa continued to use the moniker as a solo project, writing songs and collaborating with various guest vocalists until it ended in 2003.
In 2017, MONDO GROSSO’s first new album in 17 years, Reborn Again and Always Starting New, was warmly received by music lovers both in Japan and overseas, taking the top spot on the iTunes Album Chart in Japan and hitting 8th place on the Oricon Album Chart. The music video for Labyrinth, featuring guest vocalist Hikari Mitsushima, has since racked up over 30 million views on YouTube.
In recent years, Osawa has also been active with a duo called RHYME SO that he formed with Australian singer-songwriter, model and DJ RHYME.
